Shaken by a lot of problems between the government and PKK over the question of the kurdish population, the area in the east towards the borders of Syria, Irak and Iran doesn't have the best reputation. That's why tourists shy away from beautiful places like
Mardin
a city on top of a hill gazing over a vast and seemingly empty landscape that leaves you in the illusion you could look all the way to the nearby Syria. It has got the calmest and most hassle-free bazar I have seen in a long time. The streets are curvy and invite to explore or sneak into corners or backyards. And if you're lucky you might meet a small, broadly smiling boy who invites you to a secret path on top of a mosque...
(Sanli)Urfa
a pilgrimage city, which is mostly visited by turkish tourists. It is said to be the place where Abraham died. Be aware of the tourist attraction of the fish pond where there are more fish than water as soon as you get nearer with food.
Van and the surrounding area
with the beautiful lake Van Gölü. Inmidst this lake you can find an island which is accesible through a ferry that goes whenever there are more than six people who want to go out. If it wasn't forbidden and I hadn't to go further on my way, I would have tried to stay on that island, bath in the crystall clear water, watch the sunsets and invite others to visit me there so they can get rid of their prejudices about eastern turkey...
please go and see for yourself! I experienced the places as safe and friendly, open and not as problematic as some other people told me before...
